There is no law saying that only Wikipedia pages and scientific articles can contain references. So if you want to increase the credibility of your website, use references at will.

One of the best-known tools for this, which is also free and open-source, is Zotero. In this article we'll use the web version of this tool to show you how to import references into your website.

Before I get to the point, I'd like to show you that adding references can be as simple as pasting a link into this field and waiting for Zotero to automatically fill in the fields about the reference's details.

Zotero feature for importing references

After entering and editing your references, you can export them one by one, or all at once. Choose the RIS format. This format is one of the most commonly used by reference managers to export references 1.

Option to export references in RIS format on the Zotero website

To import the references into your website, click on the "Import from RIS file" button. You can select one or more RIS files.

You can edit your references in Zotero freely, export them to a RIS file and then import them again. The files will be imported into your website smoothly. However, there is one detail: sometimes the reference ID is provided by the reference manager, but often the references don't come with an ID. In these cases we generate an ID from the type of reference, the title, the author's name and the year of publication. When re-importing a reference, avoid changing these fields so that your references are dynamically inserted into your website correctly.

Lastly, when editing your articles, insert the imported references by pressing Ctrl + R (Cmd + R on MacOS) or clicking on the   .
